Welcome to the website dedicated to the
first Cincinnati Reds baseball club of
the National League.
This first NL Reds club lasted only five
years, between 1876-1880, during a
baseball era that little is known about.
Although it is widely believed that this
club is the same as the Reds franchise
that we know today, the actual fact of
the matter is that the National League
forced this particular club out of business.
Following the 1880 season, the National
League announced new rules which
prohibited clubs from renting their ball
parks on Sundays and the sale of
alcohol. Reds ownership refused to abide
by the new rules and as a result were
expelled from the league. With no
available league to play in, the Reds
front office had no other option but to
cease operations and the club's players
were left on their own to seek contracts
with other baseball clubs. It wasn't
until the 1882 season that a new Reds
club was organized in Cincinnati as a
charter member of the fledgling American
Association. That particular Reds
club survived to modern times and is the
club that we love today.
This website is currently still under
construction. Please bear with us. When
completed, this website will be
jam-packed with articles, game summaries
and box scores devoted solely to this
first NL Reds club. We hope you enjoy
the website as much as we enjoy
providing it to you.
