Reds - Home Jersey |
| |
|
| |
The
uniforms of the 1891 Association
Reds were similar to the 1891
National League Reds club. Home
jerseys were white with red trim
and red stockings. |

The
Association Reds' road uniforms
were dark blue with red stockings. Both the home and
road jersey were laced.
We believe that the uniforms had
white lettering on the road
jerseys but we cannot confirm
it. |

The Reds played a handful of
preseason exhibition matches in
Boston and the club wore white
stockings in these games. |

Mike Kelly pushed Reds ownership
to dress his club in green
stockings. A color that was
seldom used in baseball uniforms
at the time. The owners refused.
In an article published on April
7th, it stated
"Kelly's order of green
stockings for the Cincinnati
Association team, would indicate
that his heart is still true to
Ireland. That color |
|
won't
do however. The only other club that
ever wore green, the famous Mutual of
New York, had to discard the color
because of the danger of blood poisoning
in case of injury."
However, Mike Kelly disobeyed club
orders and dressed his club in green
stockings for a number of away games
played in April. By the time the club
made their home debut, the color was
dropped for red stockings.
Major league baseball uniforms for the
most part continued to omit green from
their uniforms with the exception of the
1910 Phillies and 1937 Dodgers. It
wasn't until 1963 when the Kansas City
Athletics picked up the color and
permanently adopted it.
