first base, Hugh Nicol sets a club record by
drawing five walks in six appearances at the
plate. Nicol's other plate appearance he hit a
double. |

Phillies by a score of 8-1. Cincinnati's Dick Hoblitzel hustles out an inside-the-park
grand-slam in the 4th inning. |

Christy Mathewson and his Giants behind Art
Fromme's one-hitter. Cincinnati wins 2-0. |

1918 - Following a Reds/Braves
double header in Cincinnati, manager Christy
Mathewson resigns to accept a commission as a
captain in the chemical warfare branch of the
Army. Heinie Grohn taked over for the rest of
the season. |

of first place after an extra innings loss to
the Giants in game one of a double header, 6-4.
The second game ends in a fifth inning tie. |

Ebbets Field Cincinnati loses, 4-2. In the 4th
inning slow Ernie Lombardi steals a base. |

1954 - The Reds defeat the
Pirates, 3-2, behind the ninth inning home run
of Ted Kluszweski. The hit would begin a
seventeen game hitting streek. |

1955 - The Dodgers shut down
the Reds with a final score of 7-0 behind the
stellar pitching of rookie Sandy Koufax. It was
Koufax's second major league start. Koufax was a
former Cincinnati Bearcat who played on the
basketball and baseball clubs. |

1961 - Cincinnati maintains
first place by taking two from the Dodgers in a
double header. First game, Gene Freese hits a
three run shot in the seventh to help the club
to a 6-5 victory. Second game, the Reds hammer
Don Drysdale, 8-3. |

1969 - The Reds defeat the
imploding Chicago Cub's with a 6-3 victory
behind Tony Cloninger. Chicago, who had a nice
lead in the National League East, is now only
two games ahead of the Mets. The loss would be
the seventh in the last eight games for the
Cubs. |

1978 - Joe Morgan smacks his
200th homerun and becomes the first player in
history to have 200 homers and 500 stolen bases. |

Expos, 4-1 and in the process ends Vladimir
