Reds demolish the Orioles, 20-0. Cincinnati's

1944 - The Boston Braves hurler
Red Barrett gives up only two singles all game
and is never behind on a batter as he shuts down
the Reds with an impressive 2-0 win. Barrett
only needed to hurl 58 pitches to do so. This is
the major league record for fewest pitches in a
9-inning game. The game only took one hour and
15 minutes‚ the fastest night game ever. |

1956 - The Redlegs Ed Bailey

1981 - After a month and a half
player's strike, the season restarts with the
Reds losing to the Dodgers by a score of 4-0.
Major League Baseball decides to split the
season in half, with the first half winners
playing the second half winners in a division
series at the end of the season to determine the
division winner. Due to this silly format, the
Athletics, Phillies, Yankees and Dodgers are
guaranteed a playoff spot in these division
series no matter how poorly they due during the
second half of the season. |

2004 - In Great American Ball
Park Adam Dunn crushes what is believed to be
the longest homerun in major league history. It
measured 535 feet and carried over the batter's
eye, beyond centerfield, bounced onto Mehring
Way 20 feet beyond the ballpark and lands on a
piece of driftwood in the Ohio River. Since the
river is actually claimed by Kentucky‚ the homer
is probably the first in ML history to carry
into another state. |
