1887 - At American Park,
umpire Tim Hurst makes a
decision against the home team in the 2nd inning
of game 2 and a fan rolls an empty beer glass
onto the field. Hurst picks it up and throws it
back into the stands and hits and seriously
hurts an innocent fan. A patty wagon arrives and
Hurst is arrested for assault and battery and
will receive a suspension for the incident. Red
Bittman takes his place behind the plate and the
game is called at the end of 6 with the score
tied at 4 apiece. |

1940 - In
Boston, the Braves and Reds dedicate the game to
the memory of Willard Hershberger, who committed
suicide the day before. |

|
1945 - At
Crosley Field‚ the
Reds edge the Cubs‚
4-3‚ behind the pitching of Ed Heusser. It is
Cincy's only victory against Chicago this year

1960 -
Believing that Chicago's Jim Brewer is throwing
at him‚ the
Reds Billy Martin
throws his bat toward the mound. Advancing to
retrieve it from Brewer‚ who had picked it up,
the two exchange words and Martin throws a hard
overhand right that fractures the orbital bone
of Brewer's right eye. Both benches empty and
Martin continues swinging‚ decking Frank Thomas.
Brewer requires surgery and will be out of
action for a month. Martin will be fined $500
and Brewer and the Cubs will sue the combative
infielder on August 22nd for $1‚000‚000. Years
later‚ when the courts award Brewer $100‚000‚
Martin said‚ "how can they ever collect it? I
haven't got that kind of money‚" |

2011 - Former Beatle Paul
McCartney plays a concert at Great American Ball
Park on his On the Run tour. McCartney plays the
first four songs wearing a red jacket in honor
of the Reds. His GABP concert would mark the
third Cincinnati ballpark he played in. The
other two were Riverfront Stadium (1993) and Crosley Field (1966) with the Beatles. |
