Reds defeat the Pirates, 5-3. Following the win,
the Reds played three more innings against
Pittsburgh to finish a game that was incomplete
from July 6th. That game was called at the end
of the 6th inning in order to let the Reds catch
a train to Boston. The Reds would win, 2-1 and
the stats would be added to the incompleted
game from July 6th. The first place Giants
protested this, but to no avail. |

1930 - At Redland Field, the
Reds defeat the Cubs by a score of 6-5. Relief
pitcher Ken Ash gets the victory on one pitch in
a bizarre fashion. A triple play with no runners
forced out. Ash relieved Larry Benton in the 6th
inning with no outs and a runner on first (Danny
Taylor) and third (Hack Wilson). On Ash's first
pitch, Chicago's batter Charlie Grimm hits a
routine grounder to second baseman Hod Ford.
Chicago's Wilson tried to head home from third
but gets caught in a run down when Ford relayed
the ball to third basemen Tony Cuccinello.
Meanwhile Cubs' Taylor advanced to second and
stopped. Grimm, not paying attention passed
first base and began heading to second. Grimm,
noticing his mistake, headed back to first.
Reds' catcher Clyde Sukeforth lobbed the ball to
first basemen Joe Stripp for the second out.
Taylor, still on second, decides to try for
third and is retired but was tossed out. When
all was said and done it was a 4-5-2-3-5 triple
play. Reds pitcher, Ken Ash, was lifted for a
pinch runner when the inning was over. |
