1876 - Reds' pitcher Dory Dean,
who was in the midst of a 16-game losing streak,
gets hammered by the Chicago White Stockings,
23-2. Every Chicago player scored at least one
run in the outing. Former Red Stocking, Cal
McVey collects 6 hits in 7 trips. |

1878 - The Reds continue their
downward spiral as the first place Bostons edge
Cincinnati by a score of 10-9 in extra innings. |

1891 - At Pittsburgh, the Reds
edge the Pirates by a score of 1-0. Tony Mullane
pitched shutout for Cincinnati and drove in the
only run of the game. |

1895 - At League Park,
the Reds crush the Philadelphia Quakers by a
score of 19-3. |

1902 - In Chicago, the Reds
defeat the Colts by a score of 6-1. Cy Seymour
sets a major league record by hitting four
sacrifice flies in a game. |

1918 - At Braves Field the Reds
would sweep a pair from the Braves, 4-2 and 5-0.
In the first game, Cincinnati's Hal Chase and
Lee Magee attempted to throw the game, muffing a
number of plays and flubbing only the base
paths. Much to the pair's chagrin, Roush's two
run shot in the 13th inning won the game for the
Reds. Magee would admit the event two years
later. |

1921 - The Reds defeat the
Yankees in an exhibition game at Redland Field,
9-8. Babe Ruth hits two homeruns in the match,
becoming the first player to hit the ball over
the right and center field fences in
Cincinnati's park. 16,000 fans witnessed the
match. |

1926 - At Redland Field the
Reds defeat the Braves, 8-4. During the
game a huge fight breaks out. The brawl was
caused when Boston's third base coach Art Devlin
hurled insults to Reds' third baseman Babe
Pinelli. During the game Pinelli brushed up
against Devlin when he was heading to the third
base coaching box. Devlin punched Pinelli with
Pinelli, who was a former boxer, returning the
favor by pummeling him and causing both benches
to clear. After order was restored, Braves
outfielder Jimmy Welsh smashed into Cincinnati's
catcher Val Picinich on a close play at home
plate. Picinich decked Welsh in the face and
benches cleared again. With fists flying by both
teams, the Cincinnati police had to come in and
break up the mayhem. Boston's Frank Wilson
decked one of the police officers while he was
trying to arrest him. |

1946 - The Reds edge the
Braves, scoring an unearned run. Final score,
1-0. It would be Johnny Vander Meer's sixth
straight win. |

1956 - The Reds lose to the
Dodgers by a score of 2-1. The game was played
at Roosevelt Field in Jersey City, NJ. The
Dodgers played a number of games in New Jersey
as leverage for a new field in Brooklyn. |

Reds rally from a 6-0 deficit to edge the Cubs
by a score of 7-6. |

Pirates by a score of 2-0. This despite Reds'

surrendering thirteen hits. |

1977 - The Reds lose to the
Cardinals by a score of 9-8. Rose collected his
2,881 career hit which set a record for all time
leader among switch-hitters. |

1990 - In San Diego, the Reds
lose to the Padres by a score of 2-1. Prior to
the game, comedienne Roseanne Barr butchers the
National Anthem, screeching it out word for
word. She finished the "performance" by grabbing
her crotch and spat. The fans booed her back to
the stoneage. |

1997 - In Jack McKeon's
managerial debut with the Reds, his club loses
to the Braves by a score of 7-3. McKeon, who was
a senior advisor of player perssonel, replaced
Ray Knight as Cincinnati skipper on an interim
basis. |
