1878 - In Boston, the first
place Red Caps edge the second place Reds by a
score of 8-7. Boston's Harry Wright scored the
winning run with two outs in the bottom of the
9th. O'Rourke hit a sharp grounder to third that
team captain Cal McVey muffed. The lose put the
Reds three and a half games behind Boston for
first place. |

1911 - In Brooklyn, the Reds
lose 1-0 to the Dodgers in a fabulous pitchers
duel. Brooklyn's pitcher Nap Rucker carried a
no-hitter into the 9th inning but lost it after
retiring two batters. With one more out to go,
Bob Bescher gets a hit up the middle to end his
no-no. Reds' pitcher Frank Smith pitched a
two-hitter with Brooklyn's lone run being
unearned. Both teams combined for just 48 at
bats. |

1918 - The Reds sell Fred Toney
to the Giants. |

1926 - At Redland Field, the
Reds hammer the Braves by a score of 13-3. All
Reds runs were scored in the first three
innings, eleven runs racked up in the 2nd
inning. Of the starting lineup, only Wally Pipp
didn't score. |

1952 - At Ebbets Field, the
Reds are defeated in extra innings, 7-6. Heading
into the 10th, the score was locked up at 2-2
and Cincinnati scored four runs in the top of
the inning. However, the Dodgers scored five in
the bottom of the inning. |

1973 - In Riverfront Stadium,
the Reds defeat the Expos by a score of 6-0.
However, the victory would come at a cost.
Shortstop Davey Concepcion injures his ankle
sliding into third base. Concepcion, who was to
appear in the All-Star Game in two days, would
be out for the remainder of the season. |

1979 - At Wrigley Field,
the Reds and Cubs split a double header, 12-1 &
8-4. In game one Johnny Bench ties a National
League record with five walks. Dave Concepcion
hits a grand slam in the 8th inning to pad their
lead. |

1986 - At Riverfront Stadium,
the Reds lose to the Mets in 14 innings, 6-3.
The five hour game was total mayhem.
Setting the tone‚ Darryl Strawberry is ejected
after arguing a called 3rd strike in the 5th. In
the 9th‚ Howard Johnson inadvertently kicks the
ball after Reds catcher Bo Diaz drops a third
strike. Johnson runs out of the baseline and is
hit in the back with the throw from pitcher Ron
Robinson. Reds coach Billy DeMars is ejected for
arguing the safe call. The Mets‚ down 3-1‚ with
2 out‚ tie the game when Dave Parker who drops a
routine fly ball. In the 10th‚ Davey Johnson
sends in pitcher Rick Aguilera to hit for
pitcher Doug Sisk. Aguilera walks‚ but is
stranded. In the Reds 10th‚ pinch-runner Eric
Davis steals second base and third‚ bumping into
Ray Knight. Knight decks Davis and both benches
empty. Knight‚ Davis‚ Kevin Mitchell and Mario
Soto are ejected. Gary Carter moves to third
base McDowell comes in to pitch‚ and Orosco
moves from the mound to right field. With two
out and a runner on second base in the 11th‚
Orosco returns to pitch‚ McDowell moves to left
field‚ and Mookie Wilson shifts to right. Rose
protests when Orosco is permitted eight warm-up
pitches. Orosco whiffs Max Venable to end the
inning. In the 12th‚ The Mets are forced to lead
off the inning with Orosco and McDowell‚ and go
down in order. McDowell returns to pitch in the
13th and gets Tony Perez to fly to Orosco in
right. Howard Johnson belts a three-run homer in
the 14th‚ scoring Hearn and Orosco‚ and the
latter won't score another run until 2002.

2012 - Cincinnati boy and
career Red Barry Larkin is inducted into the
Baseball Hall of Fame. Larkin would be the third
player inducted that spend his entire career
with the Reds. The other two being Bid McPhee &
Johnny Bench. |
