1878 - At Avenue Grounds, the
Reds defeat Indianapolis by a score of 4-3 in
extra innings. Cal McVey's high pop fly allowed
Lip Pike to score the winning run. The victory would pull Cincinnati within a game and a
half of first place. |

1897 - In Cincinnati the Reds
defeat Baltimore by a score of 8-5. The win
would move Cincinnati into a second place tie
with the Orioles. |

1905 - At League Park,
the Reds defeat St. Louis by a score of 9-5.
Cincinnati's Tommy Corcoran hits an
inside-the-park grand slam in the 3rd inning. In
appreciation, fans gave him two pairs of shoes,
a bat and a box of candy for his effort. |

1915 - Cincinnati takes both
games from the Cubs in a double header. Final
scores were 8-5 and 12-7. Reds' Heinie Groh hits
for the cycle in the second game. |

1935 - The Reds obtain the
36-year-old Hall of Famer Kiki Cuyler after he
was released by the Cubs. |

1955 - At Crosley Field the
Redlegs defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. During the
game Cincinnati manager Birdie Tebbetts
complains to umpire Jocko Conlin about St.
Louis' catcher Bill Sarni delaying tactics in
the game during a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the
9th. Cardinals manager, Harry Walker, runs out
and begins arguing and both club's skippers
begin throwing punches. Benches clear and and
fights break out. Both managers fall to the
ground with fists flying. When the two were
finally separated, the bloody skippers were
tossed from the game. |

1965 - The Reds move into first
place after defeating the Dodgers, 7-5. Jim
Maloney gets the win. |

1970 - The Reds defeat the
Astros, 3-1. It would be pitcher Wayne
Simpson's tenth straight win. |

1973 - The Reds defeat the
Giants by a score of 4-3. Davey Concepcion
nearly hits for the cycle, falling shy by a
homerun. The shortstop collects a triple, double
and three singles. |

1980 - The Reds defeat the
Astros by a score of 8-6. Pitcher Bruce Berenyi
makes his major league debut and gives up six
runs in the 1st inning. Manager John McNamara
pulls him and replaces him with Mario Soto. Soto
shuts out Houston for the rest of the game. |
