Tigers Checker Skid With Early Assault.

The Cincinnati Tigers, breaking a six-game losing streak, outskated Tulsa for two periods and held off a third-period rush to hand the Oilers a 6-4 defeat at Riverfront Coliseum.

Defenseman Christian Thellend scored unassisted at 5:45 of the final period to put the Tigers ahead by four goals. But the Oilers got goals from Greg Kostenko at 9:42 and Rick Bowness at 15:19 to put some pressure on Cincinnati in the final minutes.

The Tigers attracted their largest crowd of the season, 5,457.

Almost a full week of rest seemed to agree with the Tigers. Unlike their previous home appearance when they were shoved all over the ice, the Tigers did the pushing against Tulsa in the first two periods and dominated the ice for a 5-2 lead.

A pair of power-play goals put Cincinnati ahead, 2-0, less than six minutes into the game. The trio of Bruce Boudreau, Reggie Thomas and Dave Debol teamed up for both goals.

Tigers goalie Curt Ridley blanked the Oilers on 12 first period shots, but the ice turned into a shooting gallery in then second period. The teams traded goals for a 4-2 Tiger advantage, with Ron Sedlbauer picking up an easy goal at 2:29 and Tulsa's Danny Geoffrion coming right back 22 seconds later for the Oilers' first goal.

Only 18 seconds had elapsed since Geoffrion's goal when Boudreau got his second, but Tulsa's Larry Hopkins took advantage of a Cincinnati defensive lapse to score at 6:19.

With defenseman Dave Logan off for holding at 8:07, the Tigers really started to hustle and the result was a short-handed goal with Debol passing to Sedlbauer at 10:05.
