The Game. |

The Cincinnati Stingers skated for two periods
but, playing their third game in three nights,
ran out of gas in the final period to drop a 3-1
decision to the Houston Aeros. Leading, 1-0,
after two periods, Cincinnati gave up two goals
to Rich Preston, one with second left into an
open net with goalie Michel Dion off for a sixth
Stinger attacker.
Preston scored his first goal to tie the game 12
seconds into the final period, getting a pass
from Andre Lacroix and dumping the puck past
Dion right in front of the goal. His second came
at 9:51 on a pass from Larry Lund.
Referee Peter Moffat, fresh from the Stingers'
debacle in Birmingham, called five misconduct
penalties in the last 20 minutes, three to
Cincinnati players.
Compared to the previous night in Birmingham,
the feeling on the ice at the Summit was almost
festive. In the first 20 minutes there were
three penalties, including a fight, but mostly
just hockey.
The Stingers thought they had a goal just 18
seconds into the contest when Blaine Stoughton
took a shot from the slot and Rich Leduc swatted
the rebound out of the air into the net. But
referee Peter Moffat ruled high stick on Leduc's
maneuver and disallowed the goal.
With the exception of a disagreement between
Dennis Abgrall and Morris Lukowich midway
through the period, in which no damage was
inflicted, the teams just skated at each other
until 18:35 when Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead on
Stoughton's second goal of the season.
Peter Marsh dug the puck off the boards in the
Aeros' zone and threw it across the ice to
Stoughton, skating in from the other side.
Goalie Ernie Wakely, the former Stinger, had
committed to Marsh and Stoughton fired into an
open net.
The Stingers had the power play at 14:41 when
Scott Campbell was called for holding, but
couldn't click. The Aeros held a 10-9 edge in
shots for the first period.
The second period belonged to the goaltenders as
Wakely and Dion came up with big saves. Both
teams had some good scoring opportunities, but
the combination of goaltending and bad bounces
by the puck prevented any scoring.
The period was a bit sloppy at times as neither
team seemed interested in maintaining pressure.
Late in the second period, Cincinnati managed to
hold the puck in Houston ice but Wakely refused
to yield. Each team took eight shots at the
opposing goalie in the second 20 minutes. |
