Stingers Squander Leads As Aeros
Struggle To Tie. |
|
Cincinnati Enquirer by Terry Flynn |
|
12-31-1977 |
|
|
The Cincinnati Stingers blew a pair of two-goal
leads and couldn't connect in 10 minutes or
sudden-death overtime as they were forced to
settle for a 5-5 tie with the Houston Aeros at
The Summit.
Peter Marsh tied the game at 11:25 of the final
period, getting the puck from Ron Plumb and
firing from the left circle to beat goalie Ernie
Wakely. That was Cincinnati's last goal as
Wakely refused to yield the rest of the way.
Terry Ruskowski put the Aeros in front, 5-4, at
8:02 of period three with a goal much like that
of Marsh, taking the puck in the circle and
shooting low on the ice past Norm LaPointe.
The Stingers, winning two of three games in as
many nights, raised their record to 14-19-1.
Houston, also playing their third straight,
climbed to 15-15-2 on the season.
The up-and-down Stingers, who were up Wednesday
against Indianapolis and down Thursday when they
lost to Birmingham, 7-1, were up again against
Houston. They gave up the first goal only to
score three in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Cam Connor put Houston on the board at 1:14,
getting the puck in front form John Tonelli who
was behind the Stinger net. Connor had not
trouble getting the puck past goalie Norm
LaPointe.
Just 20 seconds later, Cincinnati scored on an
identical play, Jamie Hislop carrying the puck
behind the net and feeding Brian Coates who was
parked in front of goalie Wakely.
The Stingers were back with the same maneuver at
5:55, this time Peter Marsh feeding Rich Leduc.
The Stingers went ahead 3-1 at 12:10 as Robbie
Ftorek deflected a Hislop shot in front. The
Houston defense was napping only all three
goals, John Schella being caught twice and
beaten to the puck.
The Aeros pulled back within one at 16:59 when
former Stinger John Hughes fired from just
inside the blue line. LaPointe made the initial
stop and Andre Lacroix potted the rebound.
Houston outshot Cincinnati, 15-12, in the first
period.
Neither team looked especially sharp, due to
doubt in part to each playing its third game in
as many nights. |
