Stingers Stun Racers.
Cincinnati Enquirer by Terry Flynn
03-06-1977

The Cincinnati Stingers guaranteed in advance they would beat the Indianapolis Racers or give everyone at the game a free ticket for tomorrow's contest with Houston. There will be no freebies. The Stingers manhandled the Racers, 6-0. The win was the eighth in 11 games for goaltender Jacques Caron and his third shutout since coming to Cincinnati just over a month ago.

In beating the Racers the Stingers stayed four points ahead of their neighboring arch-rivals in the WHA Eastern Division, holding down second place as the playoffs approach.

With over 2000 Indianapolis fans screaming from one end of the building, the Racers had plenty of support but couldn't find the net in the first 20 minutes. A lot of the credit for Indy's failure to score in the opening period had to go to goalie Jacques Caron who came up with some impressive saves early and again near the end of the period.

The Stingers struck first with just three minutes game. Dennis Abgrall skating in on the right side and triggering a shot from the top of the circle which was blocked by Michel Dion. Unfortunately, when the Racers goalie fell on the rebounding puck it squirted free and Rick Dudley was waiting in front to score into the open net.

Cincinnati had ample opportunity later in the period to increase their lead but Dion and the Indy defense played tough. The Stingers had two power play chances, including a five-on-three advantage for nearly a minute, but couldn't fin the right combination. Caron blocked all 11 shots by Indianapolis in the first period while Dion failed on just one of the 10 taken by the Stingers.

The Stingers took just seven shots on goal in the second period, but they scored three times to leave the ice with a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. After Dudley missed a chance all alone in front, Dennis Sobchuk picked up an easy goal in the slot at 3:33 as rookie Jakie Hislop stole a pass in the Racer zone and fed Sobchuk perfectly.

The "Killer Bees" saw plenty of action in the next few minutes, successfully thwarting two Indianapolis power play attempts as Pierre Roy and John Hughes sat out penalties.

Cincinnati began to roll again at 13:19 as Greg Carroll carried the puck into the Indy zone and fed Blaine Stoughton who fired a pretty angled wrist shot which fooled Dion. Dennis Abgrall came right back at 15:04, taking a pass from Rich Leduc and skating right in front where he backhanded the puck at Dion. The goalie partially blocked the puck but it slid in just the same.

Racers coach Jacques Demers immediately pulled Dion in favor of Paul Hoganson, acquired just three days earlier from the Stingers. Hogan didn't let in any more goals in the period, but the Stingers skated the last two minutes at a disadvantage thanks to a rash of penalties. Caron continued to dazzle the Racers in the second period, blocking all 11 shots and coming up with a couple of saves when it appeared certain the puck would find the net.

The Stingers found themselves down two men as the third period opened when Sobchuk was called for spearing, but again the Killer Bees and Caron held off the Racers. Sobchuk had just reentered the contest when he scored his 33rd goal of the season, knocking in a shot right on top of Hoganson thanks to a pass from penalty-killing mate Billy Steele at 3:15.

When Kim Clackson was called for holding, the Stingers made the power play count. Leduc picked up his 41st goal of the year on a rebound of a shot in front by Abgrall at 4:57.
