Another Wonderful Fielding Game At the Avenue Grounds.
Cincinnati Enquirer
08-27-1876

There were nearly fifteen hundred people on the Cincinnati Grounds to see the last League contest between the Louisvilles and the home club. The wonderful game of the day before led many to expect another brilliant and exciting game, and no one in this was disappointed. If any distinction can be made between the two games this game must take the palm for excitement and brilliant plays all through. It opened rather discouragingly, however. Hague, the first man at the bat, earned three bases by a deceptive drive clean over Jones' head.

Devlin's hit to Jones was muffed, but a splendid throw by Pierson at home play caught Gerhardt, who were trying to tally. Devlin meanwhile endeavored to go to second, but was caught half way between the two bases by Pierson's prompt throw to Sweasy. Sweasy threw to Gould, and the latter, in passing the ball back to Sweasy as Devlin made a spurt toward second, threw wild and the runner went to third, whence he came home while Hague was being fielded out by Sweasy and Gould. Clinton retired the side by a fly to Jones. Jones opened the inning for the Reds by a safe hit to left.

After Booth foul flied out to Allison Jones went to second, while Gould was fielded out by Gerhardt and Allison. Lucky Kessler brought him home by a base hit to center. Pierson followed with a safe hit and both he and Kessler advanced a base on Clinton's fumble of the ball. A base hit now would have been worth two runs to the Reds, but Sweasy's foul-bound out to the end of the east pavilion was captured by Snyder after a remarkably hard run.

This was one of the prettiest plays of the day. The Reds earned another run in the third inning thus: Jones led off with a base hit to center, and by risky, fearless base running got to second, while Hastings was fumbling the ball. Booth was fielded out by Gerhardt to Allison, while Jones went to third. Gould followed with a base hit to center and Jones came home. Kessler made a safe hit, too but Pierson and Sweasy retired the side. The score remained two to one in the home club's favor til it was tied in the sixth inning.

Allison and Gerhardt opened with safe hits. Devlin's hot grounder to Foley was splendidly handled, and forced Allison and Devlin both out by a double play. Then Hague made a base hit to left, and Gerhardt came in on Snyder's wild throw home tying the game. It remained a tie until the tenth inning, although it began to look in the ninth inning as though the Reds might win.

The Louisvilles had been whitewashed. Sweasy went out on a foul fly, after which Foley batted safely to center. Then Williams, was given a base on called balls and occupied first, while Foley went to second. A strong safe batter would now have been worth the game. But Snyder popped up an easy fly to Gerhardt right on second base, who purposely dropped it and forced out Foley and Williams in a double play. The visitors opened the tenth inning by safe hits of Hastings and Ryan. Then Allison hit to Sweasy, who, instead of fielding him out at first in his over-anxiety held the ball and watched Hastings on third till Allison reached first. The bases were now full and none out. Gerhardt sent a hot one to Foley, who had to run from his base to reach it, letting Hastings tally the winning run, while he forced Ryan at third. Devlin retired on a fly to Williams, and Hague was put out by a beautiful foul-bound catch by Snyder. The Reds ended the game by Williams and Snyder being put out by Fulmer assisted. Allison and Jones by a foul fly to Snyder.
