1897
- During a game in Chicago, a fire breaks out in
the grandstand of West Side Grounds. Thousands
of fans started stampeding and tried to tear
down the barded wire fencing that had been put
in the 25-cent bleachers. Jimmy Ryan and Walt
Wilmot helped tear down the wire by hacking at
the fence with baseball bats, which allowed fans
to escape onto the field. The game is called
with Chicago gaining the victory, 8-1. |
